Week 1 - Trademark Sounds
The first week of our experimental audio lectures we looked at trademark sounds, which are sounds that are known for a particular location or area. Using photos with no sound context we discussed what sounds could potentially fit into the image which allowed us to come up with a variety of ideas about what could possibly be heard from the pictures.
We were tasked with going to a location and listening out for the sounds with a partner in which my partner and I were given a location just outside of uni which surrounded the university halls and the main outside area. The sounds we heard were:
Leaves Rustling
Cars
People Talking
Birds
Walking on gravel
Wind
Branches
Music
Doors opening and closing
Bikes
Clothes material
Squirrels
Explicit - Explicit sounds are the trademark sounds of a location or era etc. They're most likely sounds that are common and you'll hear in every day. Explicit sounds can also be a character in a piece as there might be a specific voice that needs to be listened to. However explicit sounds can be really subtle and might simply be slightly louder than other background noise.
Trademark - Trademark sounds is another way of saying explicit sounds in that they are the sounds that are very often heard in a particular environment.
Character - These sounds would most likely take the position of someone's voice whether that be an explicit sound with the voice taking the forefront of the audio piece or whether the sound would work as a form of background noise.
Active Listening - Active Listening means all you're doing is listening. Passive listening means your concentrating on something else. Active listening makes listening your central task, making hearing a process rather than an afterthought.
