MD6402 Experimental Audio - Lauren Samuels

During this week I had returned home for the Christmas break and so I took my time during this week to try and source my sounds as I have not yet started my piece due to our final major project which is due a few days before this deadline. I have listed below the sources I plan to use. There are not as many sources as I had originally anticipated as many of the interviews with the serial killers are hours long and so there was many quotes in one video. This was an incredibly long process due to the extensive length of some of the videos. Where i have included times after the citation was the time of which I used quotes from the video and I needed to write these down for refernce when harvesting the sound. I watched a few crime documentaries over the weekend as I spoke about in my last blog post and I watched these to get a better insight into the people my piece will be based upon but also so I could get more ideas for my piece. I wanted to listen out to see if they used any specific sounds e.g. A Judge's Hammer or if the documentaries themselves were just interviews. For the most part this may seem like it wouldn't be much use as obviously the documentaries are a different medium to that of my sound piece but I thought they would be worth looking into anyway and I would research into solely sound pieces at another time. I started with Netflix and watched a few documentaires, some I had already seen and so had prior knowledge but some I watched completely new. I've been thinking about what sounds I may need for my audio piece and have put together a list of said sounds so that during the creation of my piece I am able to follow the list of sounds making it easier for myself to put the piece together in a faster more reliable fashion. I will list below some sounds that I am considering using in my piece. Ambience Children laughing I think the main part here for me to pay attention to and to remember is the Who are you?. From watching a variety of interviews with multiple serial killers I have found that in the majority the interviewer asks "Who are you?" and they all give very different answers which I think could be an intresting way to end my piece and to round it up. I have decided to base my piece around real-life crime, with audio of interviews from criminals, judges giving sentences and new reports etc. However, they'll all be mixed together and will not go in any specific order as to not create too much of a narrative. The audience will not necessarily know who is speaking but I will choose quotes that are either well known or give a vibe that may be mysterious or devious. One thing I have noticed when watching interviews with high profile criminals is that they don't often show much emotion so all the talking is often very monotone. I would therefore for this reason not use any background music as this would take away from the monotone state I feel the piece as a whole would work with. I feel the piece should build up as it goes along so perhaps the sounds are more split up and its clearer to hear everything than further towards the end in which the piece would sound messier with a range of reverb and EQ effects etc. To get a bette...

As stated in another blog post I wanted to make a quick piece around the theme of death to test where I could potentially go with my work. I created a short piece only 52 seconds long with only a few sounds fitted together to see how experimental I could possibly make it. I think it turned out ok. Obviously, if I was to take this further within my final piece I would make it longer to fit the time restraints of the assessment and also use many more sounds and plan my piece in greater detail. The following piece of audio only consists of 5 different pieces of audio so isn't very detailed and could be improved greatly.
